Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse

I had the pleasure of sitting outside from about 2:30 until about 4:45 am enjoying a cigar and the lunar eclipse.  Here is a photograph.  Enjoy!

Amazon EC2 Outage

From April 21 through April 24, Amazon has been recovering from a major outage in it's server business. I had 4 servers on Amazon EC2's data centre in Virginia, the affected Region.  Of my four servers, one server experienced an outage.

The process of recovery involved waiting for access to my volumes, then restarting a new server in a different zone than the original server, and recovering a data backup snapshot.  While the process of recovery was quite simple once I had access, I could not reach the volumes for 2 days.

Community as Twitter as Community

Twitter seems weird and useless until you get it.  And getting it is something that when you don't, seems like a mystery.  Do I twit or tweet or do a tweet?  Funny language.

A tweet is a message.  People tweet about random thoughts, news, images, articles, and snippets to add to the community conversation.  They do so with 140 characters, URL shorteners, and #hashtags.

Performance Outcomes

I am a victim of to-do lists.  Yep.  It feels like I can't help myself but to make to-do lists and then live my life from them.  Saturday morning. What's there to do today? Make a list. Do it.

Then there are days I get tired of writing to-do lists. So what I do is rebel. No list. Just do what I want. That works for a single day.  String a couple of those days together though and I produce no results.

How to be an extraordinary person - Landmark Education

Take the Landmark Forum and learn the following:
  • Be Racket-Free: give up being right - even when you know you were.
  • Be Powerful: be straight in your communication and take what you get.
  • Be Courageous: acknowledge your fear (not necessarily get rid of it) and then act.
  • Be Peaceful: give up the interpretation that there's something wrong.
  • Be Charismatic: give up trying to get somewhere. Be entirely fulfilled in the present moment.
  • Be Enrolling: share your new possibilities in such a way that others are touched, moved and inspired.
  • Be Unreasonable: in expectations of yourself and others beyond what you would think they are capable of.

Facebook Registration Widget and Ruby on Rails

I have successfully integrated:

  • the Facebook Registration Plugin/Widget
  • Ruby on Rails
  • Devise

The existing websites that talk about how to integrate these widgets include:

What's missing from these articles is what happens after you decode the signed_request using Veerasundaravel's Rails plugin.  Namely:

Socialitings - how building a website is like art.

I am working on a new project in social media called 'Socialitings.'  The project brings together three worlds:

How to downsize your book collection

I am in the process of downsizing all of my possessions.

The challenge is that I do not want to get rid of stuff.  I look at the thing that I know I should get rid of, and I imagine how it might come in useful in the future, and then I end up keeping everything except a few obvious discardables.

Solution

Then I discovered the solution: Instead of choosing what to discard, choose what to keep!  For me, this change in perspective made a huge difference.

Ruby on Rails is tremendous value for business

I've been developing in Ruby on Rails since the keynote at OSCON 2005 in August by DHH who presented the idea that programmers shouldn't need to do xml situps...

<situps>
  <situp position="up" />
  <situp position="down" />
</situps>

Pretty funny.

Smart convention over configuration was another philosophy.  Then infused into the paradigm was the notion of minimalism and the entire philosophy of "Getting Real".

Red Eared Slider - Turtle Proofing the Filter

Our family pet, Buddy, is an 8 year old Red Eared Slider.  She makes quite a mess.  (Yes, I found out it was a girl AFTER naming her.)
